Spiral or round duct is typically manufactured from galvanized steel and occasionally aluminum. Spiral duct is increasingly common and can be fabricated to any length; however, the standard cut length is 20 feet to facilitate transportation on a standard truck.
These ducts are connected using either slip joints or flange-to-flange methods, depending on specific performance requirements. Compared to rectangular duct, round duct offers superior performance due to its lower and more favorable pressure drop characteristics, which reduce required fan speed and energy consumption. Its circular shape also makes it inherently more rigid.
